american idol was in salt lake city tonight, home of david archuleta and the osmond brothers (more on that later). it’s definitely song of the happier places the judges acquire been, and even (most of) the contestants who bombed out were amazingly polite and ample-natured. still, with a enormous flock of adoring fans flocking almost simon cowell as he entered the building, you’ve gotta wonder what’s prevalent on at fault there in salt lake city.

Anyway, let’s get to it …

David Osmond, 28, “Something Within Me” This cutie is the son of Alan Osmond, the oldest member of the performing Osmonds. Alan had to quit the business because of his multiple sclerosis, and he’s utterly emotional as he says how proud he is of David, who also has MS. While David was in a wheelchair for a while, he’s on his feet now and says the disease has ups and downs. But being a member of the famous clan doesn’t stop the judges from critiquing him. Kara doesn’t like his runs, and Paula wishes he would have picked a song from a solo artist instead of a group. Still, David gets that Golden Ticket to Hollywood.

gatehouse media inc. and the new york times co. will be facing each other in federal court this week in a fascinating case that is sure to be followed closely by bloggers and journalists across the nation.

GateHouse, one of the largest publishers of community newspapers in the United States, filed a copyright infringement suit last month claiming that the Globes’ new local Web sites are using material without permission. The New York Times Co. is the parent company of The Boston Globe.

In what will likely be a precedent setting case for new media, GateHouse claims Boston.com is violating copyright and trademark laws by republishing headlines and lead sentences from GateHouse Wicked Local sites on Boston.com, linking to the original articles [on the Wicked Local sites] and as a result allowing visitors to bypass ads posted on the GateHouse home page. GateHouse also claims this is creating confusion about the source of the original story.

Catherine Mathis, a spokeswoman for The New York Times last month said the company believes GateHouse’s claims are “without merit.”

“Boston.com’s local pages, like hundreds of other news sites, aggregate headlines and snippets of relevant stories published on the Web. They link back to the originating site where the interested user can read the entire article,” Mathis said in a statement on Dec. 22. “Far from being illegal or improper, this practice of linking to sites is common and is familiar to anyone who has searched the Web. It is fair and benefits both Web users and the originating site.”

Jeff Jarvis, who has been following the case on his blog BuzzMachine sees this as a danger to journalism. Many people would agree. “Gatehouse should be sucking Boston.com’s toes begging for more links, not siccing lawyers on them,” writes Jarvis in a post last month. “The move is not just brain dead but dangerous, for it threatens the ecology of links that I believe will be the underpinning of news online. Links are how original journalism will be supported.”

Demonstrators protest at the BBC’s central London offices Saturday against the broadcaster’s decision.

The decision prompted weekend protests in England and Scotland, with one group saying Sunday that 100 people had occupied the foyer of the BBC building in Glasgow, Scotland and would not leave until the BBC runs the ad.

The Disasters Emergency Committee, which includes the British Red Cross, Oxfam, Save the Children and 10 other charities, plans to launch the ad on Monday.

British broadcasters, led by the BBC, originally declined to air the appeal — but in the face of criticism from government ministers and others, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 changed their minds. CNN was not approached to broadcast the ad, a DEC spokesman said.

About 5,000 people demonstrated in front of the BBC’s Broadcasting House in central London on Saturday over the broadcaster’s stance. Seven people were arrested.

In Glasgow, the London-based Stop the War Coalition said Sunday its supporters had moved into the foyer of the BBC building in what the group described as a peaceful protest.

The group did not plan to move beyond the foyer but intended to stay there until the BBC changes its decision, said Keith Boyd, a coalition member who called CNN on Sunday.

"Primarily we are asking that the ad be shown," Boyd said.

The BBC press office would not confirm whether its Glasgow office was being occupied or if protesters were even there.

"We don’t comment on individual demonstrations," a statement from the BBC press office said.

The BBC is standing by its decision to not air the ad, director general Mark Thompson wrote in a blog post on the corporation’s Web site.

"We concluded that we could not broadcast a free-standing appeal, no matter how carefully constructed, without running the risk of reducing public confidence in the BBC’s impartiality in its wider coverage of the story," he wrote Saturday.

"Inevitably an appeal would use pictures which are the same or similar to those we would be using in our news programs but would do so with the objective of encouraging public donations. The danger for the BBC is that this could be interpreted as taking a political stance on an ongoing story," Thompson said.
